Edo Governor Orders Commissioners to Wear Tinubu Caps as Symbol of Loyalty

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has directed members of his newly inaugurated cabinet to publicly demonstrate their loyalty to President Bola Tinubu by wearing outfits adorned with the president’s insignia.

The directive came on Tuesday during the swearing-in of new commissioners and the inauguration of several boards and commissions in Benin City.

Governor Okpebholo, who credited his rise to power to President Tinubu’s influence and support, said allegiance to the president must go beyond verbal expressions.

“This could not have happened if we did not have a responsible president,” he said. “We have done many elections here, and the major problem we had was that the president was not with us. But today, we say thank you.

“I will not forgive any commissioner that is not wearing this cap. In our exco meetings, if you are not wearing a suit and you come without this Asiwaju cap, you will go back.”

Despite the unusual directive, the governor reminded his appointees that their selection was based on merit and not political reward.

“You have been carefully screened and confirmed by the State House of Assembly purely on merit,” he said. “Your nominations are not rewards for loyalty, but a call to serve the people of Edo State.”

Okpebholo reiterated his administration’s focus on practical governance driven by measurable outcomes, discipline, and integrity.

“Your appointment is not for personal enrichment,” he warned. “You are not here for money-making, but for service, sacrifice, and a better life for Edo people. Our government has zero tolerance for corruption.”

He charged the new officials to work as a team and remain committed to delivering tangible improvements to the lives of citizens.

“Your success will be measured by the impact you make in bringing better services and opportunities to our people,” he added. “Most importantly, I expect loyalty to the people of Edo State. History will judge us by our actions, not our intentions.”

The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN).
