Sanwo-Olu Rewards Team Lagos with Millions After Historic Victory at National Youth Games

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has celebrated and rewarded members of Team Lagos following their historic triumph at the 2025 National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State — where they emerged overall champions for the first time ever.

Team Lagos pulled off a stunning upset by dethroning the long-reigning champions and hosts, Delta State, after securing 110 medals — 52 gold, 32 silver, and 26 bronze — at the ninth edition of the Games held last month.

At a special reception held on Friday at the Lagos House, Ikeja, Governor Sanwo-Olu announced cash rewards for athletes, coaches, and management staff of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) in recognition of their exceptional performance.

Under the reward package:

  • Individual gold medallists will each receive ₦500,000, while gold-winning teams of two will share the same amount.
  • Larger team gold winners will receive ₦1 million.
  • Silver medallists will earn ₦300,000 each (or share for doubles), while team silver winners get ₦700,000.
  • Bronze medallists will take home ₦250,000 each (or share for doubles), and team bronze winners will get ₦500,000.
  • The management of the LSSC will receive ₦25 million, while 61 coaches get ₦300,000 each.
  • Even non-medallist athletes were not left out, earning ₦100,000 apiece as motivation.

Governor Sanwo-Olu described the athletes’ achievement as a major milestone in Lagos sports history, praising their dedication and discipline.

“You have written the name of Lagos in gold,” the Governor said. “Even the Governor of Delta State called to acknowledge that we have the best set of athletes in Nigeria. What you truly need to sustain this momentum are modern facilities, conducive environments, and quality equipment.”

In his remarks, the Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, thanked the Governor for his unwavering support for youth and sports development, noting that Team Lagos’ success reflected years of consistent investment.

“This victory is a direct result of the Governor’s vision and commitment to empowering young people through sports,” Fatodu said. “Lagos has truly become a powerhouse of athletic talent.”
