Benue PDP Loses Lone Rep APC

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State has suffered a major political setback following the defection of its only member in the House of Representatives, Pastor Ojotu Ojema, to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ojema, who represents the Apa/Agatu Federal Constituency and chairs the House Committee on National Inland Waterways, announced his decision on Thursday, October 9, 2025, during a meeting with PDP executives from Apa and Agatu held in Obagaji, Agatu Local Government Area.

Explaining the reasons behind his defection, Ojema said he arrived at the decision after wide consultations with his family, associates, and constituents. He blamed deep-seated internal crises within the PDP, from the national leadership down to the ward level, for making the party dysfunctional.

“The PDP has been engulfed in internal wrangling that has made it difficult for the party to function cohesively. I cannot remain in a system that stifles progress and unity,” he stated.

The lawmaker said his move to the APC was inspired by divine guidance and his desire to bring more development to his people.

“God’s instruction to me is to make people happy. My achievements in two years are visible across Apa and Agatu. I believe I can do even more in the ruling party,” Ojema said.

He thanked PDP members for their support over the years and assured that his exit would not affect his cordial relationship across political lines.

Several PDP leaders, including Hon. Ochokwu Alelu, Hon. Sunday Oteyi, Hon. Oki Saleh, and Mrs. Alima Matthew, praised Ojema’s performance and described him as a unifying and development-driven leader. They urged constituents to continue supporting him regardless of his new political platform.

Ojema’s aide, Hon. Prince Antenyi, also commended the lawmaker’s impactful representation, saying he had improved the livelihoods of thousands in the constituency.

“Although the people of Apa wished he remained in the PDP, they will not oppose what we believe is God’s decision,” Antenyi said, expressing optimism that the move would open new opportunities for the constituency.

He further called on Agatu residents to join their Apa counterparts in supporting Ojema’s defection, describing it as “a great omen for everyone.”
