Tinubu Chairs Crucial Police Council Meeting to Chart New Course for Nigeria’s Security System

President Bola Tinubu is currently presiding over a crucial meeting of the Nigeria Police Council at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The session, which began shortly after the hybrid National Council of State meeting, has brought together key figures in Nigeria’s security and justice sectors to review the state of policing and evaluate strategies for strengthening law enforcement across the country.

Deliberations are expected to focus on internal security challenges and proposed institutional reforms within the nation’s police architecture.

Before the Police Council meeting commenced, former Military President Ibrahim Babangida and former Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar logged out of the virtual platform, marking the end of the Council of State meeting. Likewise, former Chief Justices of Nigeria—Alfa Belgore, Walter Onnoghen, Mohammed Mahmud, and Kayode Ariwoola—departed the Council Chamber as the Police Council’s closed-door deliberations began.

Present at the meeting are the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police Hashimu Argungu, alongside other senior government and security officials.

The Police Council, a constitutional body, advises the President on the appointment or removal of the IGP and must confirm any such appointment before it becomes official. Beyond personnel matters, the Council also provides strategic guidance on policy issues affecting the organisation, administration, and supervision of the Nigeria Police Force.

The outcome of today’s meeting is expected to influence key policy directions and operational reforms as the Tinubu administration pushes for more effective and accountable policing nationwide.
