Falana Urges Political Solution to Nnamdi Kanu’s Case, Says Judiciary Now ‘Last Hope of the Elite’

Kanu to remain in DSS custody – Appeal Court

Renowned human rights lawyer, Chief Femi Falana (SAN), has described the ongoing trial of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, as a political matter that should be resolved outside the courtroom.

Speaking with journalists during a courtesy visit to Governor Alex Otti at his country home in Umuehim Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of Abia State, the Lagos-based legal icon maintained that there was no justification for not pursuing a political resolution in Kanu’s case.

“I cannot comment on pending proceedings,” Falana said. “But I believe it’s a matter that should be sorted out outside the courtroom. For me, it’s a political case. And if governments can negotiate with bandits or other criminal elements, there’s no reason Kanu’s matter can’t be settled politically.”

On judicial reforms, Falana lamented that access to justice in Nigeria largely favors the elite and politicians, leaving the common man sidelined. He stressed the need to strengthen alternative dispute resolution (ADR) and reform customary courts to make justice accessible at the grassroots level.

“The common man has no means to go to court,” he said. “The judiciary is the last hope of the elite. To help the ordinary people, we must promote ADR. Many Nigerians already rely on traditional rulers and community leaders to resolve disputes — we should formalize and support that system.”

Falana commended Governor Otti for the visible transformation in Abia State, noting improvements in infrastructure, schools, and healthcare facilities. He expressed confidence that Otti’s people-focused governance could deliver even greater results.

“I’ve seen signs of governance that weren’t there before,” Falana remarked. “I’ve spoken with the people, and they have given very positive feedback. The Governor must continue to make the people the centrepiece of his administration.”
