Lawmaker Links Alleged Christian Genocide Claims to Tinubu’s Failure to Appoint Ambassadors

The member representing Orhionmwon/Uhunmwode Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Billy Famous Adesuwa, has attributed the growing allegations of Christian genocide in Nigeria to President Bola Tinubu’s delay in appointing ambassadors.

Speaking during plenary on the floor of the House, Adesuwa said the absence of key diplomatic figures, including Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, has weakened the country’s global standing at a critical time.

He noted that the allegations, which have drawn attention from the U.S. Congress and particularly from Senator Ted Cruz, should not be dismissed as mere propaganda but treated as a matter of global politics requiring immediate diplomatic engagement.

“This is a very sensitive and serious issue. Nigeria cannot afford to shy away from global politics,” he said. “As we speak, I don’t think Nigeria has an ambassador to the United States or a Permanent Representative to the United Nations. That is a major disadvantage.”

Adesuwa warned that without recognized diplomatic channels, any domestic investigation or report into the allegations could “amount to nothing” in the eyes of the international community.

He urged the presidency to urgently appoint ambassadors to key nations and institutions, stressing that such envoys are vital for defending Nigeria’s image and interests abroad.

The lawmaker also called on the National Assembly’s Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Nigeria-U.S. Parliamentary Friendship Group to engage their counterparts in the U.S. Congress and Senate, describing the situation as one that demands both executive and legislative collaboration.

“This fight is not just for Nigeria; it’s for Africa,” he emphasized. “If we allow this narrative to go unchecked, Nigeria will only be the first of many African countries to face similar accusations. We cannot afford to fail.”
