Frank Tietie Slams Ex-INEC Boss Mahmood Yakubu, Labels His Tenure ‘Most Disastrous in History’

Human rights activist and lawyer, Frank Tietie, has taken a swipe at the immediate past Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, describing his tenure as the most disastrous in the history of the electoral body.

Tietie made the remarks on Wednesday during an interview on Arise Television, barely 24 hours after Yakubu handed over to the oldest serving National Commissioner, Mrs. May Agbamuche, who now leads the commission in an acting capacity.

According to Tietie, Nigerians had high hopes when Yakubu assumed office, given his promises to strengthen the country’s electoral system. However, he said the former INEC boss failed to live up to expectations.

“The general perception among many Nigerians regarding the tenure of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu as INEC Chairman is one of disaster,” Tietie stated. “He made numerous promises but delivered very little. He was politically correct and lethargic in exercising the vast powers of the INEC.”

Tietie further criticized Yakubu for failing to implement the electronic transmission of election results during the 2023 general elections, a move many Nigerians considered crucial for transparency.

“The failure to implement the promised electronic transmission of results in 2023 is seen as an unforgivable offense. Ultimately, his legacy is one of significant disappointment,” he added.
