The crisis within the Ondo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took a dramatic turn on Tuesday following the sudden resignation of its Director of Media and Publicity, Mr. Leye Igbabo.
Igbabo’s exit came barely 72 hours after the party elected Mrs. Dupe Aisida as its new state chairman at a congress in Akure, the state capital.
In his resignation letter addressed to the PDP secretariat, Igbabo cited what he described as a “hostile and unfriendly environment” as the reason behind his decision.
“It is disheartening to note that the secretariat has become hostile to me, affecting the efficiency of my responsibilities as Director of Media and Publicity,” he wrote.
The former publicity director further accused party leaders of “utter deceit, compromise, indiscipline, and lack of sincerity of purpose,” stressing that the situation had rendered his role ineffective.
“I have observed with pain the utter deceit, huge compromise, and lack of discipline within the system. Remaining in such an unproductive environment amounts to a waste of my time and energy. I therefore resign my appointment with immediate effect,” Igbabo stated.
His resignation adds to the turbulence rocking the PDP in Ondo, which has been battling a series of defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in recent months.
Amid the turmoil, speculations are rife over the future of the party’s governorship candidate, Agboola Ajayi, whose absence from recent party activities, including last weekend’s congress, has sparked rumours of an impending defection to the APC ahead of the November 16 gubernatorial election.
