The legal team of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has revealed that a private hospital in Abuja has expressed readiness to admit and treat him as concerns over his health continue to grow.
Kanu’s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, disclosed this while addressing journalists in Abuja, following controversies surrounding the agitator’s medical care.
According to Ejimakor, the Nigerian government had earlier urged the court to reject an application seeking Kanu’s transfer to the National Hospital for treatment.
“Just two days ago, I wrote a letter. A private hospital has also expressed readiness to admit him here in Abuja,” Ejimakor said. “For security reasons, I won’t mention the name of the private hospital. But if the government appears to have issues with taking him to the National Hospital, we have provided them with the option of a private hospital also in Abuja.”
On the status of the application to transfer Kanu to the National Hospital, Ejimakor clarified that the matter was still before the court.
“No, it’s pending. It hasn’t been rejected. It’s pending, depending on the admission of his report from the Nigerian Medical Association and their opinion. And if you were in court, you’d know the judge had ordered that the committee or panel to be considered by the Nigerian Medical Association shall include a member from the National Hospital. So, the National Hospital is still in play,” he explained.
The IPOB leader is currently facing trial on terrorism-related charges before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Recently, his legal team raised alarm over his deteriorating health, stressing the urgent need to transfer him for proper medical treatment.
