Cooking Gas Prices Drop Sharply by Over 21% in August – NBS

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported a significant decline in the average retail price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), otherwise known as cooking gas, across Nigeria in August 2025.

According to the latest LPG (Cooking Gas) Price Watch, the average cost of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder dropped by 21.42 percent month-on-month, falling to ₦16,195.07 in August from ₦20,609.48 in July 2025.

However, on a year-on-year basis, the price of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder still recorded a 4.13 percent increase, rising from ₦15,552.56 in July 2024.

State-by-State Breakdown

Yobe State recorded the highest average retail price at ₦16,887.42, closely followed by Adamawa (₦16,872.40) and Ebonyi (₦16,859.17). In contrast, the lowest average price was recorded in Benue at ₦15,102.50, with Borno (₦15,176.39) and Imo (₦15,177.58) trailing.

Regional Trends

The North-West zone emerged as the most expensive region for cooking gas, averaging ₦16,358.15 for a 12.5kg cylinder. It was followed by the South-East (₦16,344.61), while the South-West recorded the lowest average price at ₦15,865.17.

Prices of 5kg Cylinders Also Down

The report further revealed that the average retail price for refilling a 5kg cylinder dropped by 22.32 percent month-on-month, declining from ₦8,243.79 in July 2025 to ₦6,404.02 in August 2025. On a year-on-year basis, the 5kg cylinder price decreased marginally by 0.40 percent compared to ₦6,430.02 in August 2024.

For state comparisons, Katsina recorded the highest average price for refilling a 5kg cylinder at ₦6,945.21, followed by Taraba (₦6,893.12) and Rivers (₦6,886.49). Delta State, however, offered the lowest price at ₦5,657.50, with Bauchi (₦5,721.75) and Borno (₦6,070.56) not far behind.
