Atiku Blasts Tinubu: Says Suspension of Gov Fubara, Rivers Lawmakers Was Illegal

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has faulted President Bola Tinubu over the suspension and subsequent reinstatement of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, describing the entire process as unconstitutional.

Atiku, in a post on his Facebook page on Thursday, insisted that there was nothing to celebrate in Fubara’s reinstatement, stressing that the president lacked the power to suspend a democratically elected governor and state lawmakers.

“Lifting the suspension of Governor Simi Fubara is nothing to cheer about,” Atiku wrote.

“The suspension of the Rivers State Governor and the State House of Assembly was unconstitutional when it was done six months ago, and it is still illegal today. President Tinubu had no power to suspend a democratically elected governor and state lawmakers,” he added.

DAILY POST reports that President Tinubu had on March 18 declared a state of emergency in Rivers State following a prolonged political crisis, suspending the governor, his deputy, and all members of the State House of Assembly for six months.

On Wednesday, the president lifted the suspension, paving the way for the governor and lawmakers to return to office.

But Atiku maintained that the move was a violation of democratic principles, warning that the Rivers crisis was a clear signpost of what he called the “dictatorship” of the Tinubu administration.
