OSOGBO — A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has cautioned critics and opposition figures against making reckless comments about Nigeria and President Bola Tinubu’s administration, warning that such actions are damaging the nation’s global image.
Speaking to journalists on Sunday in Osogbo, the former lawmaker described as “unpatriotic” the growing trend of disparaging the country and its leadership in the name of politics.
Oyintiloye noted that while freedom of speech is constitutionally guaranteed, it must not translate into the use of “uncultured words” against national leaders.
“Persistent humiliation of the country, particularly by high-profile personalities at home and abroad, is tarnishing our image globally,” he said. “Although Nigeria is facing challenges, this administration is working to address them. But reckless remarks only worsen our problems.”
The APC stalwart urged critics to embrace civility and decorum when questioning government policies, insisting that constructive criticism should aim at progress rather than destruction.
“No matter the situation, leaders must be accorded respect and dignity because they represent us worldwide. The way we portray our country is how the world perceives us,” Oyintiloye said.
Drawing a comparison with the United States, he urged Nigerians to imbibe a spirit of patriotism: “Americans, no matter the circumstances, always say ‘God Bless America.’ We must adopt the same attitude and stop tearing our country down.”
He lamented that negative utterances by Nigerians abroad had subjected many citizens to unnecessary investigations and harassment, stressing that opposition politics must not come at the expense of national reputation.
Oyintiloye expressed optimism that with prayers and collective effort, Nigeria would overcome its challenges.
“Sooner or later, we will all be proud to be called Nigerians in any part of the world,” he concluded.
