Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to sanction politicians and political parties already engaging in premature campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Sunday Politics, a Channels Television programme, Falana described early political campaigns as “abnormal” and insisted that INEC must take decisive legal action.
“INEC is required to charge some of these guys before the court. Let them come to court and say, ‘Sorry, my Lord, there is no provision for punishment.’ If you fail to comply with the order of the court, you have committed contempt and you will go to jail,” the senior advocate said.
His call comes on the heels of the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) warning INEC earlier on Sunday to punish offenders or face legal action.
Falana stressed that the electoral umpire must demonstrate seriousness by ensuring violators are held accountable to safeguard the integrity of the 2027 polls.
