LAGOS — Former Labour Party governorship candidate in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has declared that the state does not belong to a single individual, stressing that its leadership should reflect the collective will of the people.
Speaking on Sunday during an interview on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme, Rhodes-Vivour dismissed the notion of one-man dominance in Lagos politics, arguing that the state is a shared responsibility.
“Lagos is a home to all. The idea that Lagos belongs to only one man and leadership in the state is controlled by only one man in the last two decades is what I’m completely against,” he said.
According to him, the issue goes beyond personal ambition. “It’s not about me. It’s about the people of Lagos, the people of Nigeria,” he noted.
Citing recent incidents, Rhodes-Vivour condemned the reported harassment of opposition parties in the state. “You have local government chairmen going on inner roads that are terrible in this Lagos in Alogbomoso with policemen to prevent an opposition party from having a gathering. The opposition parties are not coming for violence but to give quality leadership to the people,” he added.
The former Labour Party flagbearer maintained that true democracy in Lagos can only be achieved when political control is not monopolized by one individual or group.
