Tinubu Reveals Behind-the-Scenes Clash With Buhari Over APC Symbol: “He Insisted on Parliament, I Insisted on Broom”

ABUJA — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has opened up on past disagreements with the late former President Muhammadu Buhari during the formative stages of the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing Buhari as “stubborn” but principled.

Speaking while receiving members of The Buhari Organisation (TBO), led by former Nasarawa State governor, Senator Tanko Al-Makura, at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday, Tinubu recalled how he and Buhari once locked horns over the choice of the party’s symbol.

“We disagreed to agree. We even argued about a symbol. He (Buhari) insisted on parliament, and I insisted on broom. He’s so stubborn,” Tinubu revealed.

Despite their differences, the president noted that compromises were reached, which eventually sealed the historic merger of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), and a faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

The merger was formally registered in 2013, giving birth to the APC — the ruling party that ended the PDP’s 16-year grip on power.
