ABUJA — Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has attributed Nigeria’s lingering insecurity crisis to the desperation that led to the removal of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015.
Speaking on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme, on Tuesday, Baba-Ahmed recalled how political scheming and inflammatory rhetoric at the time created the foundation for today’s widespread violence.
“I contested with the late former president Muhammadu Buhari in 2011. But ever since he made a security threat comment, I refused to go out with him,” he said.
According to Baba-Ahmed, Buhari’s infamous remark warning that Nigerians would be “soaked in blood” sparked unrest, especially in Kaduna, his home state.
“There was serious violence in Kaduna. Many houses were burnt. They even went and brought people from neighbouring countries in readiness to remove Jonathan,” he added.
The Labour Party chieftain stressed that the political desperation of 2015 left deep scars on Nigeria’s security architecture, which the country is still grappling with today
