A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Monday Ubani, has affirmed that former President Goodluck Jonathan is constitutionally eligible to contest the 2027 presidential election.
Ubani made this known on Tuesday during an interview on Arise Television, where he clarified that his stance was based strictly on constitutional interpretation and judicial pronouncements, not political endorsement.
“I want to say this — my personal opinion, the legal interpretation of the eligibility of the former president clearly, is not a validation. Whatever opinion I express is not a validation of whether I want him to run for the presidency of Nigeria in 2027,” he explained.
The senior lawyer stressed that court rulings had previously affirmed Jonathan’s right to contest, noting that the 1999 Constitution does not bar him from seeking another term.
Ubani recalled that Jonathan became president in 2010 following the death of then-President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, an ascension he described as a constitutional operation rather than an election.
He added that Jonathan’s first elected term only began in 2011, and subsequent judicial pronouncements have consistently upheld his eligibility to seek re-election.
