ABUJA — The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has raised doubts over the feasibility of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national convention scheduled to take place in Ibadan, Oyo State, this November.
Speaking during his monthly media chat on Monday, Wike stressed that unresolved internal crises could derail the convention, insisting that the real challenge lies in addressing the issues leading up to the event, not the venue itself.
“The issue of the National Convention is not the problem. The problem is the issues leading to the convention, and people should understand that,” Wike said.
He revealed that the PDP has already set up a committee to address grievances in the Southeast, particularly in Ebonyi State, adding that his own team was due to meet later that evening to decide on their position.
Dispelling rumors that his comments were linked to a quarrel with Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, Wike clarified: “The venue is not the subject matter. The subject matter is — have you done what you are supposed to do before holding that convention? Instead of reporting accurately, some people turned it into me saying Ibadan won’t hold the convention. That’s not correct.”
Citing precedents, he noted: “We have held conventions in Port Harcourt and Abuja. The party can even decide to hold it in Sokoto or Borno. But before you get to the convention, have you put things in place? If not, it may be a setback.”
The minister, however, acknowledged that the PDP leadership is making efforts to resolve the issues. “If resolved to the satisfaction of the complainants, no problem. But if not, of course, they will take action,” he warned.
