ABUJA — The leadership tussle in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has taken a dramatic turn, with Nafiu Bala declaring himself the authentic National Chairman of the party.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday at his resumption, Bala insisted that both the Electoral Act and the party’s constitution empower him as the rightful successor following the resignation of Ralph Nwosu, the former National Chairman.
“Our party’s former National Chairman voluntarily resigned his position. The party’s constitution is very clear on the transfer of power. Once the chairman steps down, the deputy chairman automatically takes over,” Bala said.
Nwosu had stepped down months ago after the opposition coalition adopted ADC as part of its political realignment. In his place, David Mark was appointed interim chairman — a decision Bala rejected.
The new self-declared chairman accused opposition leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, of attempting to hijack the ADC through the coalition arrangement.
“As far as our party is concerned, we are not aware of any other leadership. I now resume office as the authentic National Chairman of our great party, the African Democratic Congress,” Bala declared.
The development deepens the internal crisis in the ADC and raises questions about who truly holds the reins of the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
