PLATEAU — The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Plateau State has suffered another setback following the resignation of retired Brigadier General John Sura, a former governorship aspirant in the 2023 elections.
Gen. Sura, who contested in the PDP primaries that produced Governor Caleb Mutfwang as the party’s flag bearer, announced his exit in a statement posted on his Facebook page on Tuesday.
Addressing his supporters, popularly known as the Sura Club and the Liberation Family, the retired military officer described his resignation as a “moral duty,” promising to personally explain the reasons behind his decision.
“It has become imperative that I address you directly as my compatriots because you have been there with me since the early days when I joined politics and ran for the 2023 gubernatorial elections till today,” he wrote.
“You might have heard the news of my resignation from the PDP. I owe you a moral duty to address you directly. Although I have discussed this issue with some of you personally, I thought you were the first to know formally.
“I will arrange and fix a date to invite you as a Political Family to discuss further on the reasons that necessitated my resignation and for a collective resolution to be taken,” he added.
Gen. Sura’s departure further deepens the cracks within the PDP in Plateau, coming barely weeks after Chief Letep Dabang, Director General of the Mutfwang/Piyo Campaign Organization in the 2023 elections, defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The wave of defections continues to cast uncertainty over the strength of the PDP ahead of future political contests in the state.
