ABUJA — Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has strongly condemned the assault of a female member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Anambra State, describing the incident as “inhumane, barbaric and primitive.”
Obi, in a post on his official X handle on Tuesday, said he was “ashamed and heartbroken” that such a dehumanising act could still occur in 2025.
His reaction follows DAILY POST’s report of a viral video showing armed men, identified as operatives of Operation Udo Ga-Achi (popularly called the Agunechemba Vigilante Group), storming a corps members’ lodge in Anambra. In the video, the victim, Jennifer Edema Elohor, and some of her colleagues were assaulted, with Elohor stripped naked and beaten by gun-wielding men.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra, lamented that the treatment meted out to the corps member was not only unlawful but also a direct attack on Nigeria’s collective humanity.
“That young girl could have been anyone’s daughter, sister, or even mine,” Obi wrote. “What happened is not only a violation of law and morality but also a direct assault on our collective humanity.”
He called on relevant authorities to ensure that those behind the act are apprehended and prosecuted, stressing that the case must serve as a deterrent to prevent future occurrences.
Obi further urged the nation to strengthen safeguards, policies, and communal values to protect women, the vulnerable, and all citizens from abuse.
“Our humanity must always come first. Without it, we are nothing but a people adrift in cruelty,” he added.
