The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has provided an update on the outcome of Saturday’s by-elections held across two senatorial districts, five federal constituencies, and nine state assembly constituencies.
In a statement by Sam Olumekun, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information & Voter Education Committee, the Commission confirmed that elections took place in Kaura Namoda South State Constituency of Zamfara State despite prevailing security concerns.
However, the Returning Officer could not declare a winner due to violence in five polling units across two wards, affecting 3,572 registered voters, of which 3,265 had collected their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs). With the margin of lead at 1,662 votes, INEC invoked Section 24(3) and (4) of the Electoral Act 2022, mandating a supplementary election.
“Consequently, the Commission has fixed Thursday, 21st August 2025, for election in the five polling units,” Olumekun announced.
He also confirmed the conclusion of two re-run elections ordered by Election Petition Appeal Tribunals in Enugu and Kano States, which had previously been disrupted by violence and thuggery.
In Enugu South 1 State Constituency, Ngene Bright Emeka of the Labour Party (LP) emerged victorious, while Ya’u Garba Gwarmai of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was declared winner in Ghari/Tsanyawa State Constituency of Kano State.
The Commission assured Nigerians that despite challenges, it remains committed to conducting free, fair, and credible elections.
