Former Ekiti State governor, Kayode Fayemi, has refuted claims by former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, that both men jointly initiated talks to form an opposition coalition.
Amaechi, speaking during an X Space session on Saturday, had alleged that he and Fayemi started the coalition discussions before expanding the conversation to include other political figures.
“Fayemi and I began the coalition discussion, and we subsequently agreed to broaden it so that it would involve more than just the two of us talking about starting a new party,” Amaechi said.
However, in a swift reaction on Sunday, Fayemi — through the head of his Media Office, Ahmad Sajoh — dismissed the claim as “false and misleading,” insisting he remains a dedicated member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“In an era where fabricated or distorted statements are often attributed to public figures for malicious purposes, we are cautious about engaging with potentially manufactured controversies designed to provoke or profit. It is possible that Hon. Amaechi did not make the statement or was misquoted,” the statement read.
“We unequivocally state that these claims lack any basis. Dr. Fayemi remains a committed member and leader of the APC in Ekiti State. At various public forums, he has consistently affirmed his dedication to the party, working to address its challenges and advance its progressive ideals for Nigeria. Nothing has changed,” Sajoh added.
Fayemi’s rebuttal comes amid rising political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with talk of a mega opposition coalition gaining traction in Nigeria’s political space.
