LASU Workers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Welfare Concerns

Lagos, August 1, 2025 — Academic and non-academic staff of Lagos State University (LASU) have embarked on an indefinite strike action, citing unresolved welfare issues and other grievances with the university management.

The industrial action, which commenced on Thursday, July 31, was declared by the institution’s four staff unions operating under the Joint Action Committee (JAC). The unions include the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).

In a joint letter addressed to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, and dated July 31, 2025, the unions announced the commencement of the strike, stressing that it would remain in effect indefinitely until their demands are fully addressed by the appropriate authorities.

The letter, titled “Notice of Indefinite Strike Action”, was signed by leaders of the unions including Prof. Ibrahim Bakare (Chairman, ASUU-LASU), Sylvester Idowu (Secretary, ASUU-LASU), Oluwaseyi Lawal (Chairman, SSANU-LASU), and Waheed Majekodunmi (Secretary, SSANU-LASU).

“Sequel to the decision reached at the Emergency Congress of the Joint Action Committee of the Lagos State University Staff Unions… an indefinite strike action should commence effective from Thursday, 31st July 2025,” the letter stated.

It further directed all staff members across LASU’s main campus, the College of Medicine (LASUCOM), and the Epe Campus to withdraw their services and vacate their duty posts immediately.

While the unions did not disclose specific details of their demands in the letter, sources within the university community said the strike centers around longstanding welfare concerns and stalled negotiations with management.

The development is expected to significantly disrupt academic and administrative activities across the institution.

As of the time of filing this report, the university management has yet to issue an official response to the strike action.
