Abuja, July 30, 2025 — The Labour Party (LP) has raised the alarm over what it describes as coordinated harassment of its key leaders by security agencies, acting on the basis of a “malicious and fictitious” petition allegedly authored by Mr. Abayomi Arabambi, who the party claims is impersonating as its spokesperson.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday and signed by Ken Asogwa, the Senior Special Adviser (Media) to the LP’s Interim National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, the party dismissed allegations that it was planning a violent protest or coup, describing the claims as fabricated and politically motivated.
According to the statement, Arabambi accused prominent Labour Party leaders—including former presidential candidate Mr. Peter Obi; NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero; Senator Victor Umeh; Prof. Theophilus Ndubuaku; and Dr. Yunusa Tanko—of plotting to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s administration under the guise of organizing a “One Million Man March” scheduled for July 30, 2025.
The party strongly denied any such plans.
“The Labour Party is not aware of any planned protest under its name. We have not authorised, endorsed, or sanctioned any individual or group to stage a march or reclaim any property,” the statement read.
It added that the alleged protest was supposedly aimed at reclaiming the party’s former national secretariat currently occupied by former chairman Barr. Julius Abure, located in Utako, Abuja—an action the party says it has no interest in pursuing.
“Following the Supreme Court’s ruling on April 4, 2025, which affirmed Senator Nenadi Usman as the authentic leader of the Labour Party, we duly informed the relevant security agencies and asked them to enforce the court’s decision. Due to their inaction, the party relocated to a new and more secure headquarters,” Asogwa explained.
The party further described the allegations of a coup plot as “deeply disturbing” and “dangerously reckless,” warning that such unfounded claims could destabilise the democratic process.
“This attempt to link a supposed protest with a treasonable offense is not only laughable but also a sinister move to frame respected leaders of the party in a phoney plot to destabilise the country,” the statement continued.
The LP also claimed that officials of the Department of State Services (DSS) have begun harassing some of its leaders based on the petition. It cautioned against what it called a return to the “dark era of phantom coup allegations” used to suppress opposition voices.
“We call on all security agencies to investigate the origin of this false petition and expose the real individuals behind this plot to create chaos and fear in the polity,” the party stated.
The Labour Party reaffirmed its commitment to democratic values, the rule of law, and peaceful political engagement, urging Nigerians to reject what it described as a “poorly scripted political drama” aimed at distracting from critical national issues.
