ASUU Yobe State University Chapter Suspends strike

ASUU-Asks-Members-To-Join-Nationwide-Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Yobe State University Chapter, has officially suspended its indefinite strike action which commenced on July 11, 2025.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Chairman of the chapter, Dr. Ahmed Karage, confirmed the development, stating that the decision followed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the union and the Yobe State Government.

“Following the Memorandum of Understanding, the President of ASUU has granted approval to call off the strike action,” Karage noted.

He further directed all academic staff members of the institution to resume work immediately.

The strike had been declared over what the union described as the government’s prolonged failure to meet critical demands. Chief among the issues were the implementation of the 2024 minimum wage of N70,000 and its consequential adjustments, proper promotion placements, and settlement of outstanding arrears from the 2019 minimum wage adjustments.

Other demands included payment of 35% and 25% salary awards, arrears of consequential adjustment from January 2023 to date, and postgraduate facilitation allowances for academic staff.

Prior to the resolution, ASUU had cited months of failed negotiations, formal correspondences, and appeals as reasons for embarking on the industrial action.

The suspension of the strike brings a welcome relief to students and the academic community, as academic activities are set to resume without further delay.
