Former Borno State Governor and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, has claimed that Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, may soon return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to pursue his 2027 presidential ambition.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, left the PDP in 2022 to secure the Labour Party’s presidential ticket, emerging as a major force in the last general election. He is currently part of an opposition coalition seeking to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the next election cycle.
The coalition, which recently adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its political platform, includes several prominent figures, among them former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi. However, the presence of multiple presidential hopefuls within the alliance has sparked concerns over its unity and future.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Monday, Sheriff dismissed the viability of the ADC as a political force, predicting its collapse within a few months. He also suggested that Obi’s return to the PDP is imminent based on what he described as “available information.”
“As far as this politics is concerned, ADC doesn’t exist. Give the party three months and it will die down,” Sheriff said.
“The information available to me is that at any moment from now, Peter Obi will go back to the PDP and run as a presidential candidate under PDP.”
Sheriff further expressed confidence that, despite the growing opposition alliance, the APC remains the party to beat, citing its existing political structures across the country.
While there has been no official statement from Peter Obi or his associates regarding a possible defection, Sheriff’s remarks have added to ongoing speculation about the future of the opposition coalition and the strategic alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
