2027: Ireti Kingibe Vows Landslide Re-Election Despite Wike’s Opposition

Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the National Assembly, has declared that she will secure a landslide victory in the 2027 general elections if she decides to seek re-election—despite opposition from FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

Kingibe, a member of the Labour Party and Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Women Affairs, made the statement during an appearance on Political Paradigm, a programme aired on Channels Television on Tuesday.

“I know that I will win in a landslide victory, bigger than the last one,” she stated. “The last one, bear in mind, that I went to the Senate with one of the highest, if not the highest, votes of any legislator. And it was not just about [Peter] Obi. Yes, he brought some votes, but I also brought some votes to him that would not normally go to him.”

The senator’s remarks come in response to comments made by Minister Wike in July 2024, where he reportedly vowed that Kingibe would not return to the Senate in 2027.

However, Kingibe expressed strong confidence in her support base, asserting that the people of Abuja would vote her back into office.

She also accused the FCT Minister of treating residents of the capital with “disdain and contempt,” noting that many locals harbour resentment towards him.

Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, was appointed FCT Minister by President Bola Tinubu in August 2023.
