Former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has paid a sympathy visit to Niger State following the devastating flood disaster in Mokwa Local Government Area.
Obi, who was received at the Niger State Government House in Minna by the Deputy Governor, Comrade Yakubu Garba, conveyed his condolences on behalf of his delegation. Speaking during the visit, he emphasized the strategic importance of Niger State to Nigeria’s development, particularly in agriculture.
“Whatever affects Niger State affects the entire nation,” Obi said. “Considering its comparative advantage in agriculture, this state has the potential to transform Nigeria for good.”
Obi described the flood as a tragic natural disaster and called for more proactive measures to manage and reduce its impact. He stressed the need for the government and stakeholders to explore long-term solutions to recurring floods, while pledging to mobilize additional support for the victims.
The former governor also offered prayers for the repose of those who lost their lives and comfort for the grieving families and the people of Mokwa.
In his response, Governor Mohammed Umar Bago, represented by his deputy, described the flood as a national catastrophe, noting the extensive damage caused. He commended Obi for the thoughtful visit, saying it was an honour to the state.
Governor Bago assured that his administration would continue its efforts to mitigate flood risks and intensify public sensitization, especially in riverine areas. He further reiterated his appeal for both national and international assistance to support the affected communities.
The visit comes as part of growing calls for comprehensive disaster management strategies in Nigeria, particularly in states prone to seasonal flooding.
