The Peering Advocacy and Advancement Centre in Africa (PAACA) has called on political parties, civil society organisations, and other critical stakeholders to thoroughly interrogate the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) guidelines and reviews as the nation prepares for the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at a town hall meeting in Sokoto, organised in collaboration with the Federal Government and the MacArthur Foundation, the centre stressed that empowering citizens with the right information was crucial to preventing electoral manipulation.
“Ninety percent of crimes during elections are committed by politicians. If citizens are empowered with the right information, manipulation becomes difficult,” said PAACA’s Convener, Ezenwa Nwagwu.
INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner in Sokoto State, Umar Yusuf Garba, represented by the Head of Voter Education and Publicity, Abdullahi Sale Dawa, described the event as a vital platform for deepening public understanding of electoral processes.
Similarly, the Sokoto State Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Alhaji Babangida Kurfi, represented by Ms. Okeke Uche Ngozi, commended the initiative, noting that the town hall was timely as it allowed stakeholders to reflect on ongoing reforms, consolidate gains, and identify areas requiring improvement.
The centre emphasised that familiarising stakeholders with INEC’s rules would help secure credible elections in 2027.
