2027 Presidency: Tinubu, Atiku Must Play Regional Politics to Win – Dele Momodu

Veteran journalist and publisher, Dele Momodu, has weighed in on the 2027 presidential race, stressing that both President Bola Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar must look beyond popularity and focus on regional alliances if they hope to succeed.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, the former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain said the next presidential contest will not be decided by fame alone but by strategic partnerships across Nigeria’s regions.

“Nobody is more famous than Tinubu and Atiku. Nobody, in that order. But fame alone cannot win a presidential election in 2027,” Momodu wrote.

He urged both men to learn from the 2015 strategy of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who paired with Yemi Osinbajo, a southerner, to secure nationwide acceptance.

“It is going to be a battle of the regions, the way Buhari combined with Osinbajo in 2015. Tinubu already has an advantage in the South with the incumbency factor,” he added.

Momodu argued that no opposition figure can single-handedly challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC), which he described as a political “behemoth.” He said the 2027 election has already taken the shape of a North-South contest.

“The South will support a Southern candidate, and the North can no longer be persuaded or blackmailed into supporting the South after the treatment meted to them after the last election. It has become everyone for himself and God for us all,” he declared.
