Datti Baba-Ahmed, the former vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, has dismissed reports claiming that he has declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Friday, Baba-Ahmed described the claims as misleading, stressing that he had not made any such declaration.
The clarification follows reports that surfaced earlier in the week suggesting that the Labour Party chieftain had thrown his hat into the ring for the 2027 presidential race.
Addressing the issue, Baba-Ahmed explained that his recent comments were misconstrued, noting that he merely reaffirmed his membership of the Labour Party.
“I never declared to contest for the presidency; I simply reiterated my membership in the Labour Party, even though there could be a possibility for that happening,” he said.
He added that any decision regarding a presidential ambition would depend on due process, including the release of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) timetable and the position of the party.
“I clearly stated that one will have to wait for the INEC timetable and the party to make the call,” Baba-Ahmed stated.
Baba-Ahmed was the running mate to Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential election, where both ran on the platform of the Labour Party.
