2027 Presidency: Dogara Cautions Against Muslim–Muslim Ticket, Calls for Religious Balance

Abuja — Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has urged political actors to exercise caution over the possibility of a Muslim–Muslim presidential ticket in 2027, stressing that national unity and inclusiveness must remain paramount.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Sunday, Dogara said Nigeria’s fragile diversity makes religious balance in governance a matter of justice, not fear or political convenience.

He argued that just as Nigerians openly debate rotational presidency, there should also be room for discussions around religious inclusion, noting that leadership decisions must be guided by fairness and what is morally right.

According to Dogara, governance in Nigeria must consciously accommodate people of different religious backgrounds if the country is to build a system that works for all citizens.

“If we are serious about running an inclusive government and bringing everyone together, then discussions about rotational presidency should naturally include conversations about religious balance,” he said.

Dogara explained that religious representation transcends geography, adding that a Muslim candidate, whether from the North or South, symbolically represents the Muslim community, just as a Christian candidate represents Christians nationwide.

He emphasized that justice requires balance, insisting that such considerations should be driven by principle rather than political anxiety.

The former Speaker acknowledged that discussions surrounding the 2027 presidential ticket are already underway, noting that sitting presidents typically secure their party’s nomination.

While stating that the final decision ultimately rests with the President, Dogara expressed confidence that public opinion would not be ignored if there is a strong call for balance.

“Ultimately, whatever decision the President takes is his prerogative. However, if an overwhelming majority of Nigerians demand balance, I sincerely believe that, as a democrat, he will listen,” he said.

Dogara also warned against dividing the North along religious lines, describing such actions as a strategic mistake that weakens the region.

“Anyone who divides the North on religious grounds has effectively conquered the North,” he added.
