Abuja — Senator Ali Ndume, who represents Borno South Senatorial District, has warned that discontent is growing across Northern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that the frustration will reflect clearly at the ballot box if left unaddressed.
Ndume made the remarks on Wednesday during an interview on Prime Time, a programme aired on Arise Television. According to him, claims that the North is satisfied with the current political situation are untrue.
“If anybody tells you that the North is not grumbling now, he is not speaking the truth,” Ndume said. “The grumbling will be loud in their votes if nothing is done about it.”
While distancing President Bola Tinubu from direct blame, the lawmaker argued that the real challenge lies with individuals surrounding the President.
“I don’t think Mr President is the problem,” Ndume stated. “He is a seasoned politician who understands strategy and knows that you cannot declare yourself winner unless you are acceptable to the people.”
He revealed that Northern elders had previously engaged President Tinubu in discussions aimed at addressing regional concerns. According to Ndume, the President initially showed willingness to engage, convening a meeting with key Northern appointees and stakeholders.
“We had a very productive session,” he said, adding that the President promised continued engagement. “Unfortunately, that never happened.”
Ndume maintained that President Tinubu still has the opportunity to reverse the situation if decisive steps are taken.
“The President can change things. He can turn things around,” he said. “But as I have said repeatedly, it is not the President who is the problem — it is the people around him.”
The senator’s comments come amid growing political realignments and heightened regional sensitivities as parties and power blocs begin positioning ahead of the 2027 elections.
