2027 Elections: Catholic Church Urges Members to Get PVCs, Join Political Parties

Abuja, Nigeria — Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Catholic Laity Council of Nigeria has called on Catholics and all Nigerians to go beyond voter registration by actively joining political parties and seeking leadership positions.

The call was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by the National President of the Council, Sir Ambrose Obioha, and the National Secretary-General, Mr. Francis Ojo Oloyinka.

According to the Council, with over 35 million members nationwide, the Catholic Church cannot afford to remain passive during the electioneering period.

“As you are aware, the 2027 General Election is approximately one year away. Political activities have already gained momentum, with political parties commencing both physical and online registration of members across the country,” the statement read.

The Council noted that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has also begun engaging stakeholders to ensure free, fair, credible, and transparent elections.

Describing the Catholic Church as one of the largest stakeholders in Nigeria’s democratic process, the Council emphasized the need for active participation.

“The Catholic Church in Nigeria, with over 35 million members, cannot stand aloof during the electioneering process,” it stated.

The Council announced the launch of an extensive voter registration drive, coordinated by the Catholic Laity Council of Nigeria in collaboration with its civic engagement arm, the Catholic Social Forum of Nigeria (CSFN).

It urged Catholics and Nigerians at large to register for their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and ensure they participate fully in the 2027 elections.

“As people of faith, we affirm that every citizen’s voice is invaluable, and every vote truly matters,” the statement added.

Beyond voting, the Council encouraged the lay faithful to join political parties and seek leadership opportunities, stressing that meaningful influence can only be achieved from positions of power.

“If we do not seek leadership positions, we may not have influence in the affairs of the country. It is only when you are on the corridors of power that positive change can be made,” it said.

Reaffirming the Church’s long-standing commitment to civic responsibility, the Council said Catholics are called to be active agents of change, committed to justice, human dignity, and accountable governance.

“Our mission is to advocate for the proper counting of votes, accurate recording of results, and truthful announcement of electoral outcomes. Nigeria deserves better, and meaningful change begins with collective participation in the democratic process,” the Council stated.

It also made a special appeal to youths, women, and marginalized groups to register and exercise their right to vote, pledging to promote transparency and accountability throughout the electoral process.

“Together, we can amplify our voices and help shape the future of our beloved nation,” the statement concluded.
