Federal High Court begins break Friday over elections

The Federal High Court of Nigeria will pause proceedings for two working days being Friday March 17 and Monday March 20 in view of Saturday’s governorship and state houses of assembly elections.

Chief Judge Justice John Tsoho directed the court’s justices to sit up till Thursday, March 16 before proceeding on the break.

They are to resume on Tuesday, March 21 – two days after the polls.

The break will also allow the judges to vote in the elections.

There will, however, be one judge each available for each geo-political zone to hear urgent matters during the period.

Justice Tsoho announced this in a March 15 circular titled ‘Break for the 2023 governorship and house of assembly elections’.

It was addressed to all of the court’s judges.

It reads: “Your Lordships are by this circular granted a short break in order to perform your civic duties, during the Governorship and House of Assembly Elections.

“The break shall be from Friday, 17th March, 2023 to Monday 20th March, 2023. All Hon. Judges shall resume work on Tuesday, 21st March, 2023.

“The Administrative Judges in the Abuja, Lagos and Port Harcourt Judicial Divisions, shall ensure that a Judge is designated to cater for the North, South-West, South- South/South-East Geo-political Areas respectively, regarding urgent matters during the period.”
