At least 17 personnel of the Nigerien National Gendarmerie have been killed following a brutal attack carried out by fighters of the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS).

Security analyst Zagazola Makama, who confirmed the development on his X page, said the assault occurred on Wednesday at a security post in Garbougna, along the Terra–Niamey corridor.

According to him, the militants launched a coordinated offensive using heavy gunfire, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and manoeuvre tactics, overwhelming the gendarmerie position.

Sources revealed that a team leader and a captain were among the 17 officers killed, while about 34 others sustained severe injuries during the attack.

Makama added that several operational vehicles were destroyed, and the attackers seized weapons and military equipment before retreating.

Security forces reportedly deployed reinforcement teams to the area shortly after the incident, with aerial surveillance activated to track the fleeing assailants.

The attack has heightened concerns across the region as terrorist groups continue to escalate their operations, prompting renewed calls for stronger counter-terrorism efforts.
