Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has unveiled plans to construct a state-of-the-art Anthony Joshua Indoor Boxing Ring in Abeokuta as part of efforts to promote sports development in the state.

The governor made the announcement on Monday during a courtesy visit by Anthony Joshua, a two-time former world heavyweight boxing champion, at his office. Governor Abiodun also disclosed that Joshua would light the torch for the Gateway Games National Sports Festival, now rescheduled for May 2024.

Speaking during the event, Governor Abiodun expressed his administration’s commitment to nurturing local talent and fostering a vibrant sports culture in Ogun State.

“We are delighted to confirm you as our official sports ambassador,” the governor stated. “In addition to this honor, we plan to construct a brand-new Anthony Joshua Indoor Boxing Ring within a stadium in Abeokuta. This facility will encourage your frequent visits and inspire the younger generation of athletes. Furthermore, we will present you with a new house in Sagamu as a token of our appreciation.”

Governor Abiodun emphasized the state’s desire to collaborate with Joshua on youth mentorship programs and boxing tournaments leading to the upcoming National Sports Festival. He called on the boxing icon to support the development of sports and talent discovery in the region.

“Work with our Director-General of the National Sports Commission and Commissioner for Sports Development to design activities leading up to the festival,” the governor urged. “Your involvement will provide a significant boost to the event and our sports initiatives.”

Highlighting Ogun State’s rich heritage in arts, music, and sports, Governor Abiodun commended Joshua for his exceptional achievements on the global stage, pledging continued support for his career.

In response, Anthony Joshua expressed gratitude for the warm reception and pledged to use his platform to promote Ogun State to a global audience.

“I am proud to be associated with Ogun State and will showcase its numerous talents to the rest of the world,” Joshua remarked.

The Gateway Games National Sports Festival, initially scheduled for January, was postponed to May 2024 due to technical adjustments. Governor Abiodun affirmed the state’s readiness to host a world-class event, further cementing Ogun State’s reputation as a hub for sports excellence.
