Jamie Carragher Clarifies AFCON Remarks Amid Backlash from African Football Legends

0

Former Liverpool defender and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has clarified his recent comments on the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after facing criticism from African football icons.

Speaking after Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Manchester City, Carragher suggested that Mohamed Salah’s Ballon d’Or chances were hindered by Egypt’s lack of global success and the perceived lower recognition of AFCON. His remarks sparked immediate backlash from football greats, including Ahmed Elmohamady, Jay-Jay Okocha, John Mikel Obi, Emmanuel Adebayor, and Austin Eguavoen.

Addressing the controversy on air following Tuesday’s Champions League matches, Carragher admitted his choice of words had been “clumsy” and stressed that he never intended to undermine AFCON’s significance.

“What I would never want to be described as, as a pundit, would be ignorant or disrespectful,” he stated. “I was trying to explain the challenges Mo Salah faces in the Ballon d’Or race, and I feel that not just AFCON but also tournaments like the Asian Games and Gold Cup don’t resonate with the people who vote for the award.”

Carragher clarified that his comments were based on historical Ballon d’Or voting patterns rather than personal views on African football. He acknowledged that the award has traditionally favored players excelling in European competitions but reiterated his deep respect for AFCON and the continent’s rich footballing heritage.
