The Federal Government and the Enugu State Government have officially sealed the deal for Enugu State to host the 2026 National Sports Festival. The landmark agreement was signed on Tuesday at the Government House, Enugu, with the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, representing the Federal Government, and Governor Peter Mbah signing on behalf of Enugu State.
With this signing, Enugu State has been granted full hosting rights for the 23rd edition of Nigeria’s premier multi-sport event.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Governor Peter Mbah expressed his gratitude to the National Sports Commission and other stakeholders for entrusting the state with this significant responsibility. He assured all present that Enugu is committed to delivering an unforgettable experience for athletes, sports enthusiasts, and visitors alike.
“We appreciate the confidence placed in us to host this prestigious festival,” Governor Mbah said. “Enugu, a state with over 115 years of history and excellence, will rise to the occasion and ensure that this event becomes a benchmark in the annals of sports festivals in Nigeria.”
The governor highlighted plans to revamp the Awgu Games Village and the state’s main stadium, promising a transformation that goes beyond mere renovations. “We are delivering a brand-new Games Village and state-of-the-art sports facilities. By the end of the year, we will unveil a world-class sports hub designed to inspire and impress,” he stated.
Hon. Olopade, the National Sports Commission’s Director-General, revealed that the choice of Enugu was based on its impressive bid, enhanced security, and Governor Mbah’s commitment to improving the state’s sports and social infrastructure.
“Enugu stood out with its readiness and vision. The hosting rights reflect our belief that the state will deliver a spectacular festival that boosts investment and tourism,” Olopade noted.
Enugu’s preparations are already underway, with teams mobilized to upgrade existing facilities and construct new ones to meet international standards. The 2026 National Sports Festival is expected to leave a lasting legacy for the state, fostering economic growth and solidifying its reputation as a hub for sports and culture.
