End of an Era: Real Madrid Reject Xabi Alonso’s Plea to Keep Modric

Real Madrid have reportedly turned down incoming manager Xabi Alonso’s request to retain veteran midfielder Luka Modric beyond the current season.

According to Spanish outlet Diario AS, Alonso had urged the club’s hierarchy to keep the Croatian legend for at least another season, citing his experience and leadership. However, the board declined, sticking to their initial decision to part ways with the 39-year-old.

Modric is set to make his final LaLiga appearance for Los Blancos this Saturday when they take on Real Sociedad on the last day of the season. He will officially leave the club after their FIFA Club World Cup campaign this summer.

The midfield maestro joined Real Madrid from Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur in 2012 and has since enjoyed a glittering career in the Spanish capital. Over 12 years, Modric has lifted 28 major trophies, including six UEFA Champions League titles and four LaLiga championships. He also clinched the prestigious Ballon d’Or in 2018, breaking the decade-long Messi-Ronaldo dominance.

Tributes have been pouring in from past and present Real Madrid players, as fans prepare to bid farewell to one of the club’s all-time greats.

Despite leaving the Bernabéu, Modric is not hanging up his boots just yet. The Croatian captain is expected to represent his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
