Chelle Confident in Super Eagles’ in 2026 FIFA World Cup

Super Eagles head coach, Eric Sekhou Chelle, remains confident that Nigeria can still secure a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite a rocky start to their qualifying campaign.

The Malian tactician, who recently took charge of the team, has chosen to focus on the remaining fixtures rather than dwell on the past—particularly the disappointing draw against Zimbabwe. Speaking to Brila FM, Chelle stressed the importance of staying optimistic and strategic in the final stretch of the qualifiers.

Chelle: “We Must Win in South Africa”
Nigeria currently trails Group C leaders South Africa by six points, following a string of underwhelming results before Chelle’s appointment. However, their 2-0 victory over Rwanda offered a glimmer of hope. With just four games remaining, the Super Eagles must win all to stand a realistic chance of qualifying—and Chelle has pinpointed the upcoming match against South Africa as a must-win.

“It’s an obligation to win in South Africa, but the most important match for us right now is Rwanda in Uyo,” Chelle stated.

“South Africa are a good side, but for that game, we cannot afford to let them play. First, we have to beat Rwanda at home, then we’ll focus on South Africa.”

Crucial Fixtures Ahead
The Super Eagles will host Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on September 3rd, before traveling to face South Africa on September 6th in what could be a defining encounter.

Nigeria’s chances hinge not only on winning their remaining matches, but also on group rivals dropping points along the way. South Africa, looking to return to the World Cup for the first time since 2010, remain the team to beat.

Preparation in Motion
To keep the team sharp ahead of the September qualifiers, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is reportedly lining up a series of friendly matches. A high-profile clash against FIFA-banned Russia is expected in June, alongside participation in the proposed Unity Cup featuring Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, and Jamaica. However, the NFF is yet to confirm these fixtures officially.

With renewed belief under Chelle’s leadership, the Super Eagles are determined to rewrite their qualifying story and soar back into World Cup contention.
