In a heated exchange of political words, the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Lere Olayinka, has fired back at former Governor of Ebonyi State, Dr Sam Egwu, over recent remarks predicting the decline of Nyesom Wike’s influence.
Egwu had claimed that Wike was “living on borrowed time” and that his political relevance would soon wane. But in a strongly worded statement, Olayinka dismissed the assertion, describing it as “laced with envy and bad belle.”
“Unlike Egwu, who is more like a spoon-fed politician, Wike’s political progress has been built on personal hard work, dedication, commitment, and above all, the grace of God,” Olayinka said.
He further accused Egwu of projecting his own political failures onto others. “Someone who mismanaged his political life will always think others will do the same,” he added.
Olayinka also defended Wike’s stance on internal party issues within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), particularly the controversy surrounding the office of the National Secretary. He reaffirmed that Senator Samuel Anyanwu remains the party’s legitimate National Secretary and criticized those pushing for his replacement.
“It is laughable that Dr Sam Egwu—a former Commissioner, two-term Governor, former Minister, and Senator who couldn’t deliver votes for the PDP in the 2023 elections—is now among those making threats against the party,” he stated.
Addressing Egwu’s suggestion that Wike should ensure the reinstatement of the suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, Olayinka described the remark as “preposterous.”
“To insinuate that the FCT Minister has the powers of the President or National Assembly is nothing short of beer parlour talk. Comments like this only reflect a deep-seated frustration over Wike’s political rise,” he concluded.
Olayinka said while Egwu is free to express regret, “no one can stop him from living in it.”
