The Special Assistant to the suspended Rivers State Governor on Electronic Media, Jerry Omotsegunwa, has disclosed that Governor Siminalayi Fubara has not been informed by his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, about the reason behind their prolonged political feud.
The rift between Fubara and Wike, which began in late 2023, escalated to the point where President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18, 2025. This action led to the suspension of Governor Fubara and members of the state’s House of Assembly.
Former Transport Minister and ex-Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, recently claimed in an interview with DW that the conflict stemmed from issues related to money sharing. However, he condemned President Tinubu’s decision to impose emergency rule in the state, describing it as unconstitutional.
Responding to Amaechi’s remarks, Omotsegunwa stated on Sunday that Wike has yet to clarify the cause of his disagreement with Fubara. He dismissed Amaechi’s assertion as a personal opinion, emphasizing that the real reason behind the discord remains undisclosed after nearly two years.
Omotsegunwa said, “As it stands right now, I will not dispute Amaechi’s position, even though he has the right to his own opinion. This crisis has dragged on for almost two years now, and nobody has told us what the actual problem is.”
He further noted that despite speculations, neither the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister nor Governor Fubara has provided any definitive explanation. He recalled that during discussions about the governor’s potential impeachment, Fubara had asked, “What is my offence?” without receiving a clear response from Wike, who reportedly accused the governor of attempting to dismantle his political structure.
Omotsegunwa acknowledged Amaechi’s right to share his perspective but reiterated that, without a clear statement from Wike, the true cause of the crisis remains a mystery.
Efforts to obtain a comment from Wike’s media aide, Lere Olayinka, on Sunday proved unsuccessful, as he declined to address the issue.
