Wike Sets Condition for Peace, Says He’ll Forgive Fubara if Apology Comes

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared his willingness to reconcile with suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, if the governor offers a sincere apology over the prolonged political crisis in the state.

Speaking during a media parley in Abuja, Wike addressed the lingering tensions between him and Governor Fubara, which erupted shortly after Fubara assumed office in 2023. The rift led to a deep division within the Rivers State House of Assembly, culminating in factional disputes and rising security concerns across the state.

Amid escalating tensions, President Bola Tinubu had earlier intervened by suspending Governor Fubara for six months and appointing a sole administrator, while also calling for calm and a return to order.

Wike, however, insisted that genuine efforts toward peace must start with Fubara. “I don’t like people who are hypocrites,” he said. “Let her [referring to a political figure] mention any elder in Rivers running around the governor who has taken concrete steps to achieve peace.”

He added: “The day Mr President intervened, the Assembly members immediately withdrew the impeachment notice. I’m open to forgiveness — if he comes sincerely.”

Wike’s comments mark the clearest indication yet of a possible truce, though observers say a peaceful resolution will depend heavily on mutual compromise and genuine dialogue between the warring factions.
