ABUJA — Political strategist and Group CEO of Global Investment and Trade Company, Baba Yusuf, has accused the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, of deliberately destabilising the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to frustrate its chances in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme on Friday, Yusuf alleged that Wike’s strategy is designed to block the emergence of strong presidential contenders such as former President Goodluck Jonathan and former Labour Party flagbearer Peter Obi.
“You know, in my opening remarks, and I’ve said it consistently, even in the studio and my writings, it’s what I call the linchpin strategy of Minister Nyesom Wike,” Yusuf stated.
He continued: “The end game for Minister Nyesom Wike is to ensure that the PDP is not stable enough to bring a credible candidate, whether it is His Excellency, Peter Obi or His Excellency, former President Goodluck Jonathan. All the way, you will see this spoiler game being played by Minister Wike.”
Yusuf faulted the PDP leadership for allowing Wike to gain so much control within the party, saying their inaction had emboldened him.
“Like the Hausa say, ‘they have slept on their hands and allowed the cob to become a lion.’ They were supposed to ensure four, five years ago, that the party’s structure was not held the way Wike has done,” he said.
According to Yusuf, both Obi and Jonathan would be formidable challengers to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), but Wike’s influence could prevent them from securing the PDP ticket.
“That is the political cul-de-sac the PDP elders allowed themselves to be boxed into. When you allow funding of a party to be in the hands of an individual, after a while, you will not be able to have a voice,” he warned.
