Why El-Rufai Dumps APC, Joins SDP

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the party’s deviation from its founding principles and failure to uphold internal democracy.

In a statement released on Monday, March 10, 2025, El-Rufai announced his decision to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP), which he described as a more suitable platform for advancing his progressive political vision.

Discontent with APC Leadership

El-Rufai, a key figure in the formation of the APC, expressed disappointment over the party’s recent trajectory, stating that it had strayed from its original ideals.

“Developments in the last two years confirm that there is no desire on the part of those who currently control and run the APC to acknowledge, much less address, the unhealthy situation of the party,” he said.

The former governor also lamented that his contributions to the APC’s electoral victories in 2015, 2019, and 2023 had been disregarded by the party’s current leadership.

“The APC has castrated its organs and treated its membership with contempt in the last two years. I find this no longer acceptable.”

El-Rufai Embraces SDP for ‘Good Governance’

Announcing his defection, El-Rufai said the SDP aligns better with his commitment to democratic values, good governance, and national unity.

“I have now decided to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and adopt it as the platform for our future political engagements and activities,” he stated.

His move marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape as the 2027 general elections approach.
