“We Endorsed Tinubu, Not APC” — Ogun PDP Fires Back Over Defection Rumours

ABEOKUTA — The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has debunked claims that it has endorsed the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate ahead of the August 16 by-election for the Remo Federal Constituency, describing the reports as “a blatant lie and calculated misinformation.”

The rebuttal came after a viral social media report claimed that the PDP had effectively conceded defeat by backing the APC’s candidate in the upcoming House of Representatives poll.

In a statement on Tuesday signed by its Publicity Secretary, Kayode Adebayo, the party clarified that its recent public show of support was solely for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid — and not for any APC candidate in Ogun State.

“The attention of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Ogun State has been drawn to another concoction of falsehood being shared on some social media platforms,” the statement read. “The unfounded story has it that the Ogun PDP has openly endorsed the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and effectively conceded defeat ahead of the August 16 bye-election. What a blatant lie!”

The clarification follows public comments made by PDP state chairman, Abayomi Tella, and the party’s 2023 governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu, during the campaign flag-off of the PDP’s own candidate, Bolarinwa Oluwole, for the Remo federal constituency.

According to Adebayo, the party’s endorsement of President Tinubu was based on the “imperative of power shift to the South” during the 2023 general elections and does not extend to supporting APC candidates at the state level.

“We want to make it clear that our endorsement of President Tinubu does not affect our party’s position in the 2027 National Assembly elections or other state elections,” he said.

He further accused the APC of deliberately twisting facts to cover up its dwindling popularity in the state.

“We are not unaware of the reasons why the APC attempted to twist the core of the matter. It is a tactical way of accepting the reality of another round of electoral defeat in the by-election,” the statement added.

Reaffirming its confidence ahead of the polls, the PDP insisted that the APC cannot withstand a free and fair election in Ogun State “following the abysmal management of the state” under the ruling party.
