Three Lawmakers Dump Labour Party for PDP, Cite Gov. Mbah’s Leadership as Motivation

ENUGU — In a major political shift ahead of the 2027 general elections, two members of the House of Representatives and one Enugu State lawmaker have officially defected from the Labour Party (LP) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), attributing their move to the transformational leadership of Governor Peter Mbah.

The defectors include Rt. Hon. Dennis Agbo (Igboeze North/Udenu Federal Constituency), Hon. Chidi Obetta (Nsukka/Igboeze South Federal Constituency), and Hon. Malachy Onyechi (Nsukka West State Constituency). Their defection was formalized on Thursday at the PDP State Secretariat in Enugu, where they were warmly received by the State Chairman of the PDP, Dr. Martin Chukwunwike.

Addressing the gathering, Rt. Hon. Dennis Agbo declared that the Labour Party had lost its foothold in Enugu North Senatorial District, popularly known as the Nsukka zone. He hailed Governor Mbah’s performance as the key reason behind their return to the PDP.

“With this move, Labour Party no longer has a presence in Enugu North,” Agbo said. “Governor Mbah has made opposition nearly irrelevant through his visionary and impactful leadership. We believe in the future he is building, and we are proud to align with him.”

Hon. Chidi Obetta echoed these sentiments, describing his defection as a return “home” to the PDP. He credited Mbah’s achievements in transportation, healthcare, infrastructure, education—particularly the construction of over 7,000 classrooms under the Smart Schools project—and his administration’s commitment to tackling insecurity as driving factors.

“We are here to partner with him and support his re-election in 2027,” Obetta affirmed.

In his remarks, Dr. Chukwunwike expressed delight at the return of the lawmakers, noting that their absence had significantly affected the PDP’s performance in the 2023 elections. He expressed optimism that their return would strengthen the party’s position ahead of the next electoral cycle.

“With their experience and influence, we are confident of reclaiming lost ground and ensuring a smooth PDP victory in 2027,” Chukwunwike stated.

The development marks a significant boost for the PDP in Enugu State, as political realignments begin to shape the path toward the 2027 elections.
