In a dramatic turn of events, officials of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday took control of multiple local government secretariats across Osun State, sparking controversy and political tension.
During a visit to some affected council areas, Nelsdaily observed a noticeable police presence in locations such as Osogbo and Olorunda. However, at the time of the takeovers, security personnel were absent in several other councils where the incidents occurred.
The affected local government areas include Obokun, Ife-East, Odo-Otin, Atakumosa-West, Orolu, Ejigbo, Ifelodun, and Ilesa-West, among others.
Reacting to the development, the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly condemned the action, describing it as an illegal move that undermines democracy and threatens public order.
“Today, members of the opposition party in the state, the All Progressives Congress (APC), forcefully broke into local government secretariats across the state. This unlawful invasion is not only a direct attack on our democratic institutions but also a clear violation of the rule of law and a threat to public peace and order,” he stated.
He further criticized security agencies for allegedly allowing the act to take place under their watch. “Even more disturbing is the fact that security agencies, who are meant to uphold the law, were present while these illegal acts were being carried out. This is unjust, unlawful, and unacceptable,” he added.
As the political situation unfolds, stakeholders are calling for urgent intervention to prevent further escalation.
